SEMINOLE – Pinellas County School Board members Rene Flowers and Linda Lerner today (May 21) endorsed Alex Heeren in his race for the Florida House in District 66.

“The Florida Legislature is in need of a representative who remembers why he was sent to Tallahassee. As an elected official representing public school education, I truly believe that Alex understands the need for impactful and empowered legislation – focused on launching our scholars beyond anything they could ever imagine,” Flowers said. “As a former teacher, Alex understands that tests are meant to measure, not to punish, and that our teachers are deserving of a salary commensurate to the futures that they mold and shape on a daily basis. I know, without a doubt that Alex will fight for Public School Education.”

Lerner said, “I support Alex because he will stand up for our teachers and our support staff,. For too long, the Legislature has expected educators to do more with less, and it’s time for that to end. We can count on Alex to fight to fully funding our public schools and raising wages for teachers that work so hard for our students.”

Heeren said, “I’m so proud to have the support School Board Members Flowers and Lerner because they have been working tirelessly for the students and teachers of Pinellas County for so long. When I’m elected to the Florida House, I will be bringing their voices, and the voices of our students, teachers, and parents, to Tallahassee.”

Heeren has also been endorsed by Pinellas County Commissioner Pat Gerard, Belleair Beach City Councilmember Wanda Schwerer, and Belleair Bluffs City Commissioners Joe Barkley and Jack Nazario.

Heeren was born in Seminole and has lived there for almost his entire life. Heeren was a math teacher for several years at Meadowlawn Middle School. He also ran a Girls Who Code after school program, and still coaches the school’s volleyball team.

Heeren is now a technology integration coordinator with Pinellas County Schools helping teachers incorporate technology into their classrooms.

Heeren, a Democrat, is running for House District 66, which includes Seminole, Belleair, the north beaches, and portions of Largo, Pinellas Park and Clearwater. It is currently held by Republican Larry Ahern who is running for the Pinellas County Commission.

Also running for the seat are Republicans Nick DiCiglie and Berny Jaques.

The primary is Aug. 28. The general election is Nov. 6.
