ST. PETERSBURG – Lawyer and veteran Javier Centonzio announced today (Jan. 4) that he is running for Florida House District 69.

“I was honored to serve my country in the military, and now I’m ready to serve my community as a member of the Florida House,” Centonzio said. “District 69 needs a leader who is ready to take on tough issues from day one. I have the experience and the track record necessary to deliver positive results for the district.”

Centonzio served four years in the Marine Corps and then five years in the Kansas Army National Guard before moving to District 69 to pursue a law degree from Stetson University College of Law. While at Stetson, he helped create the school’s Veterans Law Institute, which provides pro bono legal assistance to disabled veterans in the community. In 2014, Centonzio received a masters of law in Elder Law from Stetson. He also owns two businesses in the district, including the law firm of Weylie Centonzio.

Centonzio is an active member of the community. He is a Life Member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 57 in St. Petersburg, a board member of the Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch based in Pinellas Park, and volunteers as an attorney with the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program. Centonzio also sponsors a multicultural club at Lealman Elementary School that helps promote understanding and acceptance of different cultures. Additionally, he founded “Heroes Weekend,” an event to honor veterans in Gulfport, and started the Sgt. Jessie Davila Memorial Veterans Scholarship in memory of his friend who died in combat. The fund provides scholarships for veterans interested in attending law school.

The HD 69 seat is currently held by Kathleen Peters, who is running for Pinellas County Commission. Fellow Democrat Jennifer Webb and Republicans Ray Blacklidge and Jeremy David Bailie have also announced they are running for HD 69.

HD 69 is located in the southwestern portion of Pinellas County. It includes the southern beach communities of Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach and Tierra Verde, as well as the mainland communities of Gulfport, South Pasadena and portions of St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park and the unincorporated Lealman community.

Qualifying for the race is noon June 18 through noon June 22. The primary is Aug. 28 and the general election is Nov. 6.
