ST. PETERSBURG – Darden Rice is kicking off her reelection campaign at an event tonight (Sept. 19).

The kickoff is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Flying Boat Brewing, 1776 11th Ave. N in St. Petersburg. Guests are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the St. Petersburg Free Clinic.

Rice is seeking her second term as the District 4 representative on the St. Petersburg City Council. She earned her bachelor’s in American studies from Eckerd College in 2000, graduating with distinction. She also completed the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Executive Leadership Program in July 2014.

She is a past president of the St. Petersburg chapter of the League of Woman Voters and has been a longtime civic activist for such issues as promoting access to affordable, quality healthcare; taking the bias out of medicine; defending voting rights by fighting unfair voter suppression laws; protecting clean water; and promoting clean energy. Rice is spearheading a proposal to limit outside political money in St. Petersburg’s elections.

She is facing a challenge from political newcomer Jerick Johnston for the District 4 seat. District 4 includes portions of central and north St. Petersburg including the Crescent Lakes, Meadowlawn, Euclid Heights and Euclid-St. Paul’s neighborhoods.

The St. Petersburg council has eight members who are responsible for setting policy and a budget. St. Petersburg council members serve four-year terms and earn $44,452 annually. The nonpartisan election is Nov. 7.
