TAMPA – Janet Cruz has received the Moms Demand Action “Gun Sense Candidate” distinction.

Cruz is running for state Senate District 18, one of the most watched and competitive races in the state.

“This distinction is an honor because these moms are the real heroes — fighting to keep children safe from harm,” Cruz said. “As a mother, it’s heartbreaking that the NRA is more important to many lawmakers than moms. But not me, I will never shy away from doing what’s right for our children and pubic safety. We should ban AR-15s, better fund our schools, and invest more in mental health.”

Cruz said she has been a tireless advocate for common sense gun reform, including standing up to the NRA, voting to ban AR-15 assault rifles, and keeping guns out of schools.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Everytown Survivor Network, is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with more than 4 million supporters.

Cruz was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2010 and served as the Florida House Minority Leader for the 2016-2018 term. She was recognized for her legislative service by the Community Health Charities of Florida, the Florida Health Care Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation.

Before running for office, Cruz was an optician and later the director of Optical Operations for Cigna Healthcare, as well as being active in her community as a volunteer for Paint Your Heart Out Tampa, a member of the Hillsborough Community College Alumni Foundation, and Corporate Chair of Cigna Healthcare for the United Way Campaign.

Democrat Cruz is running for the District 18 seat in the state Senate, which is currently held by Republican Dana Young. District 18 runs from South Tampa to northwest Hillsborough County.

Neither Cruz nor Young has a party opponent so this race will not be on the Aug. 28 ballot. It will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
