Crist, Castor, Graham Endorse Rice in St. Pete Council Race
Darden Rice is running for her second term in the District 4 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council.
ST. PETERSBURG – Darden Rice score a triumverate of endorsements from current and former members of the state’s Congressional delegation in her run for reelection to the St. Petersburg City Council.
U.S. Reps. Charlie Crist, D-St. Petersburg; Kathy Castor, D-Tasmpa; and former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham have endorsed Rice. Crist is a former governor and Graham is running for governor. Graham, from Tallahasee, represented the Second Congressional District, which covers a portion of the panhandle and big bend areas. Graham served from 2015 until this year.
“Darden is a rockstar and I’m proud to call her a friend. We’ve worked together for years to make St. Petersburg a better place to live, work, and play,” Crist said. “She has an impressive track record creating innovative solutions to the issues facing our community. We need her leadership on council, and she has my steadfast support.”
Castor said, “Council Chairwoman Rice is committed to improving the quality of life for residents of St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay. I have great respect for her leadership on transportation and a clean and healthy environment – both of which are key to our economic success. That’s why we need her to continue her leadership on the St. Petersburg City Council for the next four years.”
Graham added, “I’m proud to support Darden. She’s exactly the kind of leader we need in St. Petersburg. She sets a strong example of thoughtful and courageous leadership that local government leaders around the state can look to and emulate.”
Rice said, “I’m honored to have the endorsement of these special and dedicated Florida leaders who look out for our working families. ” Darden said. “We’re very fortunate to have such dedicated leaders fighting for us in Washington. I’m excited to continue our work together.”
Rice has also received the endorsement of the West Central Florida Labor Council, SEIU, Police Benevolent Association, St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters, Sierra Club, and Florida Conservation Voters.
Qualifying for the St. Petersburg City Council election opens at 8 a.m. June 8 and ends at 5 p.m. June 23. The primary is Aug. 29 and the general election is Nov. 7. Jerick Johnston has announced he is also running for the District 4 seat.
