Buckhorn Endorses Alvarez for Florida House

Mike Alvarez is running in the Democratic primary for the House District 62 seat.

TAMPA – With one week of remaining in the race for Florida House District 62, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has announced that he’s endorsing Mike Alvarez.

“There is only one candidate in this race that speaks to the heart and soul of this district and that is Mike Alvarez,” Buckhorn said. “He knows the community, has served his country as member of the United States Marine Corps, and is prepared to be our representative in Tallahassee. He will be a credible and competent voice for West Tampa and Town and Country.”

Alvarez joined the Marine Corps after the 9/11 attacks and served three tours overseas in the 31 st Marine Expeditionary Unit. When he returned home, he continued his service to community. He’s an active member of the West Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the Oakford Park Neighborhood Association, the Sierra Club, and secretary of the Hillsborough Democratic Party Hispanic Caucus.

“Mayor Buckhorn has always been an advocate for our schools, our community, and our Democratic values,” Alvarez said. “I’m humbled to have his endorsement and I look forward to working with him to build on our successes.”

Buckhorn joins a growing list of high profile endorsers including U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, the Florida Education Association, the AFL-CIO, the West Central Florida PBA, and the Hillsborough LGBTA Democratic Caucus.

Alvarez is running for the HD 62 seat currently held by Democrat Janet Cruz, who is running for the state Senate. Also in the Democratic primary for HD 62 are Christopher Carlos Cano and Susan Valdes.

Early voting has begun. The final day to cast a ballot is Aug. 28.
