Most of Mayor Sandy Bradbury’s campaign chest comes from heavy hitters outside Pinellas Park and from donors who get city business. The polls are open today (March 13) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

PINELLAS PARK – With voters headed to the polls today, one thing is clear: Mayor Sandy Bradbury won the race to raise money for her reelection campaign.

Bradbury raised more than six times as much as challenger Donna Saxer, a retired Pinellas Park police officer. Brabury raised a total of $7,950 cash to Saxer’s $1,200 in cash donations, according to campaign finance documents filed during the campaign. Bradbury also received $448.41 in in-kind donations while Saxer received $347.75 from in-kind donations.

It’s not only the amounts raised that differentiate the two campaigns, it’s where the money came from.

In Saxer’s case, about a third – $400 – of the total cash donations came out of her own pocket. And, the bulk – about 67 percent of the total comes from Saxer’s loan to herself and donations from former Mayor Bill Mischler and his wife, Joan, ($300) and his brother, John, and his wife, Eileen ($100). The remainder of Saxer’s cash donations came from individuals inside and outside the city.

Bradbury also loaned money to her own campaign – $300. And her father, former Mayor Cecil Bradbury, donated $50 to her. Her mother, Margaret, donated $100. Other money from inside Pinellas Park came from former city spokesman Tim Caddell and his wife, Tracey ($100); City Council member Rick Butler ($100); City Council member Jerry Mullins ($250); the Pinellas Park firefighters union that endorsed her ($250); and Joe’s Towing ($500). That total – $1,650 – accounted for about 21 percent of her total cash donations.

The bulk of her money came from elsewhere. Among those donors:

  • the Pinellas Realtor Organization, which endorsed her ($1,000);
  • Northside Engineering ($500), a Clearwater firm owned by Madeira Beach resident Housh Ghovaee. Bradbury works for Northside Engineering;
  • Ron Book, whom the city pays $68,000 a year for lobbying services ($500);
  • Patricia Book of Hollywood, FL ($1,000);
  • Trail Ridge Landfill, Inc. (two donations of $300 and $700 each, totaling $1,000). Trail Ridge Landfill is operated by Waste Management and serves the city of Jacksonville and Duval County. Waste Management contracts with Pinellas Park for citywide trash and garbage pickup.
