Angela Birdsong is running for the District 2 seat on the Hillsborough County Commission.

TAMPA – Angela Birdsong released a video today (Sept. 27) contrasting her “People First” campaign with what she said is her opponent’s No. 1 priority – giving millionaires and billionaires a new baseball stadium.

Birdsong, a Democrat, is running against Republican incumbent Ken Hagan for the District 2 seat on the Hillsborough County Commission.

“I’ve spent months meeting with voters and listening to their concerns,” Birdsong said. “It’s crazy to me that Ken Hagan is obsessed with this handout to millionaires and billionaires while he ignores our transit problems and the affordable housing crisis in our county.”

Hagan has been the driving force behind a plan to give millions in taxpayer funds to the owners of the Rays, Birdson said. The latest estimates put new stadium construction at nearly $900 million. Despite the enormous cost, Hagan hasn’t given any concrete answer about how he plans to pay for it.

“Major League Baseball and wealthy developers have bought Ken Hagan,” Birdsong added. “When they’re giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to a local candidate, they aren’t doing it because they want better services for Hillsborough – they expect a return on investment.”

Birdsong said she is focused on the needs of everyday people and making Hillsborough government accountable to taxpayers during her campaign. At community meetings, forums, and door-to-door, her grassroots message is resonating with voters.

“Ken needs to spend a little less time in corporate board rooms schmoozing with billionaires and some more time with the working people of Hillsborough County,” she said.

Birdson is a health and life agent helping baby boomers, retires seniors and families with Medicare supplements, life insurance and long term care insurance.

She is a member of the Democratic Progressive Caucus, Democratic Black Caucus, Democratic Veterans Caucus, Tampa Woman’s club, Former board member Hands of Hope Sickle cell foundation and former Chair of the board West Coast AIDS Foundation.

The election is Nov. 6. The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 9. To register online, go to registertovoteflorida.gov.
