Special elections for State House District 58 and Temple Terrace mayor are on the ballot.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – The first ballots went out Friday (Aug. 25) for Hillsborough County’s Special Election to fill vacancies for state representative, House District 58 and Temple Terrace mayor.

The ballots went to overseas and absent military voters, and on Sept. 5, ballots will go out to all domestic voters who have requested vote by mail for the election. Voters have until Oct. 4 to request that a ballot be mailed to them. Voters who don’t want to vote by mail can vote early or on Election Day, which is Oct. 10.

Voters must live in the city of Temple Terrace or House District 58 to vote in this election. Voters can check their Voter Information Card, look up their information at VoteHillsboorugh.org or call the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections at (813) 744-5900 to find out if they are eligible to vote in this election.

House District 58

The special election was ordered to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Rep. Daniel Raulerson. Five candidates qualified to run: Yvonne Fry and Lawrence McClure who are both Republicans; Jose Vazquez, a Democrat; Bryan Zemina, a Libertarian; and Ahmad Hussam Saadaldin, who has no party affiliation.

The Oct. 10 election will be a primary. Only Republicans will vote in the District 58 primary because no other party fielded more than one candidate. Florida has closed primaries, so voters must
be registered with a party to vote in that party’s primary election. The winner of the primary will move on to the Dec. 19 special election.

Deadline to register to vote: Nov. 20
Early Voting: Dec. 9 – Dec. 16, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Election Day: Dec. 19, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Temple Terrace

The special election will fill the mayor’s seat that became vacant in May when Kim Leinbach tendered his resignation as mayor citing and “onset of significant family health issues.” Three candidates have qualified: David Ganessingh, Mel Jurado, and Linda Ormsbee.

Temple Terrace holds nonpartisan elections, so all registered voters who live in the city of Temple Terrace may vote in the race for mayor. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes, the top two candidates will move on to a Dec. 19 runoff election.

Early Voting: Sept. 30 – Oct. 7, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Election Day: Oct. 10, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
