Janet Cruz is running for the District 18 seat in the Florida Senate.

TAMPA – The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has endorsed Janet Cruz in her run for the Florida Senate.

“We are proud to stand with a proven leader and champion like Janet Cruz. Unlike her opponent who walked way from a decisive vote to ban assault weapons in Florida, Janet Cruz has led on the issue of sensible gun reform because she is not afraid to take a stand on an issue that truly saves lives. She has delivered for Tampa families and now it’s on us to make sure her service continues in the state senate,” Marcus Fernandez, chair Northern & Central Florida Brady Chapter, said.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation’s longest-serving gun safety organization, said it is committed to helping strong candidates like Cruz get through the finish line in November.

The Brady Campaign and Center, united with the Million Mom March, is a national network of more than 90 grassroots chapter affiliates mobilized to prevent gun violence at the community level. The network has played a vital role in expanding Brady background checks in the six states that have passed legislation since the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and produced one of the largest national protests of gun violence in U.S. history – the Million Mom March, Mother’s Day 2000.

“I am honored to have the support of the Brady Campaign because ending senseless gun violence is a top priority in Florida,” Cruz said. “The tragedies that have unfolded in the last few years have to stop and the only way we get there is by bringing community groups, parents and elected officials together to make change. In the state senate, I am ready to do just that.”

Cruz is a graduate of Robinson High School who raised two children as a single mother, and worked her way through Hillsborough College before starting a successful small business. As a working mom, she said she will always be a voice for working families: making health care more affordable, providing real middle‐class tax relief, raising pay for teachers, and fully funding schools.

Cruz, a Democrat, is running for the SD 18 seat currently held by Republican Dana Young. SD 18 includes South Tampa, Harbor Island, Davis Island, West Tampa, portions of downtown including Channelside, portions of Seminole Heights and Western Hillsborough county extending to Westchase, Citrus Park and Lutz.

The election is Nov. 6. The last day to register to vote in the November general election is Oct. 9.
