Mike Alvarez is running for the District 62 seat in the Florida House of Representatives.

TAMPA – In the contest for District 62, the AFL-CIO and its workers have endorsed Mike Alvarez and his campaign to bring integrity and ethics to the Florida House of Representatives.

“Working families stand with Mike Alvarez,” said Cheryl Schroeder, executive director of the West Central Florida Labor Council. “Voters can trust Mike Alvarez to be a moral and ethical representative for West Tampa. His track record serving our country and our community honorably make him the clear choice in the August election.”

The Florida AFL-CIO represents more than 500 local labor unions, 10 labor councils, and more than 1 million union members, retirees, and their families in the state. Their key issues include investments in Florida’s crumbling infrastructure, better pay and benefits for Florida workers, immigration reform that values all members of our community, and workplace health and safety standards that benefit all workers.

“I’m so humbled to have the support of working families in District 62 and around our state,” Alvarez said. “As a fifth generation Floridian raised right here in West Tampa, I’ve seen what our community can accomplish when we do what’s right, work hard, and put people above politics. This endorsement will help me share that message with the voters.”

The Alvarez family has deep roots in West Tampa. Alvarez’s great-grandfather was born on Armenia Avenue in 1899. He was raised by a single mother in Wellswood and graduated from Hillsborough High. After the 9/11 attacks, Alvarez enlisted in the Marines, serving for four years and completing three deployments including two tours in Iraq.

After completing his service, Alvarez continued to volunteer his time as secretary of the Hillsborough Hispanic Caucus and by taking an active role in the West Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the Oakford Park Neighborhood Association, and the Sierra Club. He is the director of operations for Westfall Roofing, a local family-owned business.

He is running for HD 62, which is currently held by Democrat Janet Cruz, who is running for the state Senate. Other candidates in the HD 62 race are Susan L. Valdes and Christopher Carlos Cano, all Democrats.

HD 62 covers a portion of Hillsborough County that includes Town ‘n’ Country, Citrus Park and Egypt Lake-Leto.

The primary is Aug. 28. The general election is Nov. 6.
