U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist was named to serve on three subcommittees that oversee funding for programs critical to Tampa Bay and Florida.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-St. Petersburg, has been selected to serve on three subcommittees responsible for funding programs that he says are critical to Pinellas County and Florida.

The three – defense; commerce, justice, science, and related agencies; and financial services and general government – are subcommittees of the House Appropriations Committee.

“These subcommittees oversee funding for programs critical to Pinellas County, the Tampa Bay region, and entire state – from the defense industry, to harmful algal bloom research, to veterans treatment court programs,” Crist said. “I am thankful for this opportunity to serve as the people’s voice, fighting for the programs directly impacting the lives of Floridians and vital to moving our communities forward.”

The Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense Jurisdiction oversees the Departments of Army, Navy (including Marine Corps), Air Force, Office of Secretary of Defense, and Defense Agencies including activities related to military personnel; operation and maintenance; procurement; research and development; and the Military Health System.

NOAA oversees fisheries and harmful algal bloom research funding, and the Department of Justice includes veterans treatment court programs and federal marijuana policy, all issues impacting Pinellas County and Florida that Crist said he has championed in Congress.

The Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government Jurisdiction has oversight of the Department of the Treasury, District of Columbia, the Judiciary, Executive Office of the President (Compensation of the President, Council of Economic Advisers, Executive Residence at the White House, Federal Drug Control Programs, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program, National Security Council, Office of Administration, Office of Management and Budget, Office of National Drug Control Policy, Office of Policy Development, Official Residence of the Vice President, Special Assistance to the President, Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, Unanticipated Needs, White House Office, White House Repair and Restoration), Consumer Product Safety Commission, Election Assistance Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Office of Inspector General, Federal Election Commission, Federal Labor Relations Authority, Federal Trade Commission, General Services Administration, Office of Government Ethics, Office of Special Counsel, Securities and Exchange Commission, Small Business Administration, United States Postal Service, and Postal Regulatory Commission and Office of Inspector General

The subcommittee oversees funding for Community Development Financial Institutions and other consumer agencies Crist worked to bolster on the Financial Services Committee in the 115th Congress.

Crist represents Florida’s 13th Congressional District, which includes south and mid-Pinellas County.
