Crist: Grant Aimed at Improving Contaminated Lealman Properties
The federal brownfields grant is designed to clean up and revitalization of areas that may have been impacted by the presence of a pollutant or contaminant.
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-St. Petersburg, has announced a $300,000 brownfield grant to Pinellas County to be used to redevelop contaminated and unused properties to improve both public health and the environment.
This grant will be used primarily in the Lealman Community Redevelopment Zone to conduct environmental site assessments and plan for future cleanups. The Lealman Community Redevelopment Zone is an unincorporated area located generally between Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg on the north and south and Kenneth City and I-275 on the west and east.
“This Brownfield grant is an excellent step in the ongoing efforts to revitalize the Lealman community in a sustainable way – using the assets we already have and redeveloping them for the future,” said Crist. “Conducting these cleanups is essential for the safety of the people of Lealman and the economic growth of the burgeoning business community within the Community Redevelopment Zone.”
Distributed by the Environmental Protection Agency, brownfield grants allocate funding for clean up and revitalization of areas that may have been impacted by the presence of a pollutant or contaminant and return them to productive use.
Crist represents Florida’s 13th Congressional District, which includes south and mid-Pinellas County.
