CLEARWATER – The Florida Leagues of Mayors has elected Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos to the group’s board of directors.

Cretekos’ term will end in August 2019.

“As former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tip O’Neill said many times, and as Congressman Bill Young reminded me while I was working for him, all politics is local,'” Cretekos said. “I am honored to join President Gary Bruhn of Windemere and the League’s Board of Directors in this critical year for local governments.”

Cretekos is a lifelong resident of Pinella County who grew up in Tarpon Springs. He began working in the political field in 1971 as a legislative staff assistant for Pinellas County’s then newly elected U.S. Representative C. W. Bill Young. After several years in Washington, Cretekos was transferred to Pinellas County to assume the position as Young’s district assistant. He went back to Washington in the mid-1980s, but in 1986 he returned to Pinellas County to direct the congressman’s local offices. After his retirement in May 2006, Mr. Cretekos served as a missionary in Medan, Indonesia for the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

Cretekos was unopposed in his bid to fill the remaining term of a vacated Clearwater City Council seat in 2007. He was re-elected to a four-year term in 2008. He was elected mayor on Jan. 31, 2012, and reelected without opposition in 2016. He has served as president of the Barrier Islands Government Council and of the Pinellas County Mayors’ Council.

The Florida League of Mayors is governed by a board that represents geographical districts across Florida.

The general purpose of the League of Mayors is to provide a forum for Florida mayors to jointly study and help each other in finding solutions to problems faced by the state’s municipalities, to work cooperatively for the general improvement and efficient administration of Florida’s cities, and to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences in successful methods of administration of
