Celebrate Earth Day by Marching for Science in St. Pete

St. Petersburg will be the site of one of the marches for science scheduled for Earth Day (April 22).

ST. PETERSBURG – A nonpartisan group is calling for marches across the U.S. on Saturday (April 22) to start a global movement to defend what they call the vital role science plays in our health, safety, economies, and governments.

The March for Science is a celebration of science, organizers said.  It’s not only about scientists and politicians; it is about the very real role that science plays in each of our lives and the need to respect and encourage research that gives us insight into the world. A further goal is to urge political leaders and policymakers to enact evidence-based policies in the public interest.

Local organizers say they also want to march out of the lab and into the streets to celebrate their passion for science and call for supporting and safeguarding the scientific community. According a press release describing the reasons for the event: “The politicization of science, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted.”

The march is scheduled for 10 a.m. It will begin and end in Poynter Park, 801 Third St. S.

From the Facebook page: “One of the main goals of our march is to make connection between the public and some of the science being done in the Bay Area and the scientists who are doing it. The meet and greet is an excellent opportunity to make such connections. We encourage anyone who is involved in science or research to brings signs showing their subject area for display at the meet and greet. Interested individuals can stop for a chat or to share some of their knowledge and experience. We hope everyone will take advantage of this unique opportunity.”
