Organizers said the Ebenezer Scrooge Tax Reform Rally will include performance of a Christmas-themed sketch and carols highlighting how the GOP tax bill will hurt middle class families, homeowners, and students.

St. PETERSBURG – Activists in this city have scheduled a rally Sunday (Dec. 3) to highlight what they call, “the GOP’s latest tax scam” raises taxes on millions of hard-working Americans like our teachers, nurses, school employees, firefighters, students, and public employees.

The demonstration seeks to encourage community members to take action in opposing this “devastating tax bill that slashes taxes for the wealthy and corporations on the backs of Florida’s middle-class families.” It will include a Christmas-themed sketch to illustrate their position.

The Ebenezer Scrooge Tax Reform Rally is sponsored by Indivisible FL-13, For Florida’s Future, Women’s March Pinellas, and Fired Up Pinellas. It is scheduled for 3 p.m in Williams Park, 350 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Rally organizers said that, by 2027, the GOP tax plan would raise taxes on 45 million households – especially middle and working class families – and the family tax credit that Paul Ryan champions would expire at the end of five years, forcing families to pay more in taxes down the line. Elimination of important tax deductions like the student loan interest deduction, mortgage interest deduction, and the medical expense deduction would make it harder for middle-class Americans to pay back their student loans and afford housing and life-saving medical care.

Meanwhile, they said, the plan repeals the estate tax only paid by the super-rich saving them $170 billion and slashes $200 billion from education, job training and social services. Overall, the top 1 percent would receive 47 percent of the plan’s $1.5 trillion in tax cuts.
