The two pit bulls killed a poodle then turned on the officer, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – A police officer killed one pit bull and seriously injured another this morning (Feb. 27) after the dogs attacked and killed a poodle that was being walked by its owner, according to the Tampa Police Department.

About 5:55 a.m., Keithroy George was walking his dog, a poodle named Simba, in front of 4510 N 37th St. when the poodle was attacked by two pit bull dogs that escaped from a nearby home. By the time a Tampa police officer arrived, the poodle had been mauled to death. The pit bulls turned on the police officer, who fired several shots at the attacking dogs, killing one and seriously injuring the other. Police said a pit bull named White Boy was killed. The other, a pit bull named Tito, who recently had a litter of puppies, was seriously injured.

The officer was not injured, nor was the owner of the poodle, officers said.

Tampa police are investigating one aspect of the case: the use of deadly force by the officer. The other aspects of the case are being investigated by Hillsborough County Animal Control.
