Indo and his human partner were placed on leave after a burglary suspect threw flaming liquid on them, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – A police dog and his human partner are scheduled to return to work today (Feb. 6) after they were placed on leave when police Officer Tim Bergman wounded a burglary suspect who had thrown a flaming liquid on them, according to the Tampa Police Department.

When Bergman and Indo return to work, they’re scheduled to meet with Danielle Martin, the executive director of Frankie’s Friends, a nonprofit that provides first aid training and first aid kits to K9 officers to help them care for their dogs. Police said Martin will provide Bergman with a new first aid kit because he used some of the materials in his kit to care for Indo after the attack.

Indo was injured Jan. 12 after he and Bergman answered a call of a burglary in progress. As Bergman and Indo entered the house, they said the suspect, Joey Antonio Kennedy, 40, threw flaming liquid on them. Fearing for his life, Bergman opened fire, striking Kennedy.

Indo received burns on his head. Bergman was able to put out the fire and was not injured. Police said Kennedy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As is standard practice, Bergman was placed on leave while the shooting was investigated.
