The pit bull attacked a smaller dog and its owner, Largo police said.

LARGO – A pit bull was euthanized Saturday (June 3) after it had been shot twice while attacking a smaller dog and its owner, according to the Largo Police Department.

Police said they were called to 10th Avenue SW about 11:30 a.m. for an unknown situation. When they arrived, officers found a woman with multiple puncture wounds from a pit bull attack.

The woman was outside in her yard with her small dog when a neighbor’s 70-pound pit bull got loose and tried to attack the smaller dog. Police said the woman tried to defend her dog and was bitten eight or nine times by the pit bull.

The woman’s husband came outside when he heard screaming to find the pit bull attacking the family’s dog. Police said he tried to get the pit bull to let go of the smaller dog but was unsuccessful. Neighbors also tried to get the pit bull to let go of the smaller animal. The husband went inside to get a .38 caliber handgun, which he used to twice shoot the pit bull. The pit bull then let the smaller dog go.

Police said they arrived at that point to see the pit bull barely alive and suffering. The pit bull’s owner gave permission for the officers to end his dog’s suffering. After clearing the area, the pit bull was euthanized, officers said.

The woman was treated at a hospital for non life threatening injuries. The smaller dog was taken to the veterinarian.

Police said no criminal charges had been filed.
