The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is holding a public hearing to hear thoughts about rules governing elephant rides.

TAMPA BAY – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is hosting a public meeting to encourage comment on elephant ride regulations in Florida.

These meetings will give the public the opportunity to interact directly with Captive Wildlife staff and provide feedback on current elephant ride rules, as well as recommendations for potential changes to regulations. There will not be any open forum discussions. The primary purpose of this meeting is for stakeholders to engage staff and make recommendations on elephant ride rules.

The main topics for recommendations will be fencing, administration and animal welfare.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 5 at the Hampton Inn and Suites, Lakeland South Polk Parkway, 3630 Lakeland Village Blvd., Lakeland. The FWC urges those who are licensed in Florida for elephant rides and members of the public who have an interest in elephant rides in Florida.
