The dog attacked first one, then other family members, Tampa police say.

TAMPA – A pit bull mix named Scarface attacked its owner on Friday (Dec. 30) afternoon and then continued to attack other family members who sought to stop the attack, the Tampa Police Department said.

The attack began about 2:28 p.m. when Brenda Guerrero, 52, went outside to put a sweater on the family dog. The dog attacked her, police said.

Her husband, Ismael, 46, tried pull the animal off his wife, causing the dog to attack him. Antoine Harris, 22, also tried to help by stabbing the dog in the head and neck. The dog then began attacking Harris. All three were able to escape into the house, leaving the dog in the backyard.

Animal control and Tampa police responded. An animal control officer shot the dog with a tranquilizer gun. The dog got into the house, where there were two children in the back room. At that point, police said they used a bean bag gun and Taser to subdue the dog. Eventually, an animal control officer caught the dog by using a “catch pole.”

Both Mr. and Mrs. Guerrero were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. Mrs. Guerrero’s injuries were believed to be serious, though not life threatening, police said.
