A Chicken in the Backyard?

If you’ve ever considered backyard chicken farming, this University of Florida extension service seminar is for you.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Enthusiasm for raising chickens in urban areas is growing across the country. To give interested families tips and directions on how to get started, the UF/IFAS Extension Pinellas County is hosting a class called “Backyard Chickens 101” in partnership with the Polk County Extension Service.

Backyard Chickens 101 will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday ( Feb. 25) at the UF/IFAS Pinellas County Extension building, 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo. The program will include several sessions, taught by extension agents, to inform homeowners about the various aspects of raising chickens from start to finish:

9 a.m.- 9:30 a.m.- Welcome, Introductions and Part 1: Regulations and Breeds
9:30 a.m. -10:10 a.m.- Part 2: Nutrition
10:10a.m.-10:30 a.m.- Break and visit with exhibitors
10:30 a.m.-11:10 a.m.- Part 3: Biology, Egg Production and Food Safety
11:10 a.m. -11:50 a.m.- Part 4: Housing and Predator Control
11:50 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Part 5: Health, Biosecurity and Chicken Handling Guidelines
12:30 p.m.-1 p.m.- Visit with exhibitors
