Some area residents and Seminole council members fought to preserve the water tower, but could not come to an agreement with Pinellas County.

SEMINOLE – Demolition of the Seminole water tower has begun.

Workers removed the top this week as the first demolition began on the tower, located at the intersection of Seminole and Park boulevards, across from Seminole City Center. The landmark was well known by locals for its painted motif of birds flying in a cage.

The water tower was a bone of contention between Pinellas County, which owns the tower and the pocket park at its base, and Seminole area residents who wanted to save the structure. The Seminole City Council offered to lease the tower from the county but the two could not reach an agreement about the costs. In the end, county officials cut off negotiations and awarded a demolition contract.
