Gulfport’s third annual MLK Day of Service showcases projects that help make others’ lives better.

GULFPORT – Both in 2015 and 2016, residents and friends of Gulfport joined Americans across the country by participating in a variety of service projects during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Volunteers will gather again at 8 a.m. Jan. 14 at the Tomlinson Lake Park Complex, 54th Street and 19th Ave S, to launch the Gulfport MLK Day of Service. After breakfast snacks and the opening ceremony, volunteers will perform service projects in and around the Gulfport area. They will return to Tomlinson Park at noon for a picnic.

King’s vision of a community unified in service and helping others is alive and well in Gulfport, City Council member Yolanda Roman said.

In many ways and every day, Gulfport residents and friends are involved in actions that help make the lives of others better, she said. Guflport’s Day of Service showcases these efforts, shares them with the community at large, and gives us an opportunity to say a collective, “thank you.”

It is absolutely wonderful to know that Gulfport is part of bringing King’s teachings to life to help strengthen communities, empower individuals and bridge barriers, Roman said.
