Runners have several races from which to choose.

Looking for a race to participate in this weekend in the Tampa Bay area? Here is a rundown of local events taking place this weekend:


Saturday (Sept. 19th)

Beat the Sheriff 5K Run – 
This is the 19th year for the race, which starts 7:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Department and will be held at Courthouse Square in downtown Inverness, with all proceeds going to Citrus County’s Children’s Advocacy Center, Jessie’s Place.  Gorilla 5K Color Run – This un-timed, dry, obstacle course event will be held in Lakeland’s Holloway Park at 8 a.m.  Wear white clothing and get bombed every kilometer by color while navigating a variety of obstacles and challenging terrain. HCSO Ranch Run – Now in it’s 11th year, the HCSO Ranch Run has become a mainstay on the local racing calendar. The event has a race distance for everyone with a 5K, 10K and 15K, all being held on the streets of Temple Terrace. All registered runners will receive a tech shirt and finisher’s awards will be given to all participants. Online registration is now closed, but you can sign up on site at the Temple Terrace Elementary School prior to the start.  All proceeds from the event benefit Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch.  The 15K/10K kicks off at 7 a.m., while the 5K starts at 7:30. One Step Closer to the Cure –  The Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation One Step Closer To The Cure 5K/10K /1Mile Run/Walk will take place at Albert Whitted Park in downtown St. Petersburg. Same day registration will begin at 6 a.m. until 15 minutes before the race kicks off at 7. Entry for ovarian cancer survivors is free and there is also a virtual race option available for the event.  The course is USATF certified and chip-timed. Awards will be given to the overall top 3 males and females in the 5K and 10K and to the top male/female finisher in standard age group categories.  For more info, see:  http://ovariancancerfoundation.org/onestep/

 

Sunday (Sept. 20th)

Run For the Fallen – This free memorial event, in its eighth year, is to commemorate  the Fallen Heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan and is hosted by Marine families.  While a free event, registration is required and is available from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Tampa. T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event, which kicks off Saturday night with a motorcycle rally and and candlelight vigil. On Sunday, there will be an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. imediately followed by a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a 1 mile walk/run.
