UPDATE: Child, 3, Dies After Being Hit by Distracted Driver

Her mother and brother, 1, are in critical condition. The driver has been accused of driving with a suspended license, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HERNANDO COUNTY – A 3-year-old child who was struck while walking along a roadside with her mother, brother and sister has died of her injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Ava Thomas, 3, of Brooksville died about 7 a.m. Saturday (April 2) at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her mother, Lacey, and brother, Spencer, 1, were also in St. Joseph’s listed in critical condition. Her sister, Tana, 6, was with them when they were hit but was not struck by the car. She is uninjured, troopers said.

William Cameron Perkins, 26, of Brooksville, was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended resulting in serious injury and issued a ticket for careless driving, troopers said.

FHP troopers said Thomas and her three children were walking south along the north side of Neff Lake Road/Dauphn Drive about 5:01 p.m. Friday (April 1). William Cameron Perkins, 26, of Brooksville was driving his 2002 Jaguar south on Neff Lake Road. Troopers said Perkins dropped a cigarette, which distracted him, and he lost control of his car, which hit Thomas, Spencer and Ava.

Troopers said the case is under active investigation. Charges could be added or amended as the situation changes.
