A national poetry convention is in St. Petersburg through Sunday.

ST. PETERSBURG — The national convention of the Federation of State Poetry Societies takes place at the St. Petersburg Hilton through Sunday (June 28), with performance poetry readings open to the public today (June 26) at 8 p.m. and Saturday (June 27) at 8:30 p.m.  Admission to the readings is $10, or $5 for students, seniors and members of the military. The Hilton is at 333 First St. S.

A surrealist poetry workshop is 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Salvador Dali Museum, 1000 Third St. S. The workshop is free with museum admission.

Several widely recognized Florida poets are attending. Among them are newly appointed Florida Poet Laureate Peter Meinke of St. Petersburg; cowboy poets Doyle Rigdon and Sean Sexton; Maurice “Socky” O’Sullivan, a Rollins College professor; and Lola Haskins, a widely published poet who among other honors has been a Florida Book Award winner.
