A second motorcyclist and a van driver were taken to the hospital.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A teenage motorcyclist died Saturday (May 28) when he crashed into the side of a van that had turned in front of him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Cody Layne Newsom, 19, of Kissimmee, died at the scene. Another motorcyclist, Connor A. Waldron, 20, also of Kissimmee, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries. Manuel T. Perez, 69, of Tampa, was taken to Florida Hospital Fletcher with minor injuries, troopers said.

The crash happened about 4:05 p.m. at Florida Avenue and Palm Drive, the FHP said. Perez, who was on Palm Drive, had stopped the 2003 Chevrolet van he was driving at Florida Avenue. Mr. Newsom was driving a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle south on Florida Avenue. Waldron was also headed south on Florida Avenue on a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle. Both were traveling “at a high rate of speed,” troopers said.

Perez did not see the motorcycles, troopers said, and turned onto Florida Avenue into the paths of the bikes. Both bikes collided with Perez’s van.
