Tarpon Springs: Sinkhole Will Take Weeks to Fix
A sinkhole opened up last week, prompting evacuations of some residents from the nearby Tarpon Shores Mobile Home Park and causing damage to a sewer main. The main has been repaired.
TARPON SPRINGS – This city has established a timeline for repairing the sinkhole that opened up last week on Mango Street near U.S. 19 N. It’s a process that Tarpon Springs says could take a couple of months.
The projected timeline:
- Temporary bypasses for the two wastewater lines have been completed.
- Crews are currently working on a repair plan for a small potable water line
in the area that remains out of service. No customers are affected at this
point in time. Olympic Plaza remains under a boil water notice. Initial
testing at this location came back free of contaminants however, we are still
waiting on results of a second set of tests. - The city and county are considering a permanent relocation of the utility
lines at this time. - Several thousand gallons of wastewater remain in the hole. Pumping of this
wastewater should be completed between now and Wednesday (April 6). - Once all of the wastewater has been drained from the sinkhole, fill dirt
will be brought in. This is expected to take approximately two weeks. - Once the fill has been completed, it must settle for a period of
approximately four weeks. - After settling has completed, geologic testing and grouting will occur.
This will take approximately two more weeks. - Road repair will be completed after all work has been finished on the
sinkhole. This will take about two weeks. - If it is decided to permanently relocate the utility lines, work on this project will run concurrently with the sinkhole repair.
