Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

ST. PETERSBURG — The Studio@620, a performing and visual arts center at 620 First Ave. S, is host to a Juneteenth celebration at 6 p.m. Friday (June 19). Admission is free; donations are welcome.

The Midtown Celebrity Club and Live the Rhythm LLC will present “Let Freedom Ring,” a musical and dance production by Beryl Colbert. Performers include Acts Conservatory, Faith Memorial Baptist Church, Suncoast Dance and Music and the Academy of Ballet Arts.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration marking the end  of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War was over and that slaves were freed. This was more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — but in Texas, there were too few Union soldiers to enforce the order.

“Let Freedom Ring” is one of several celebrations at various venues. For more information, call Paulette Jones (727) 565-6094. For more about the Studio, visit www.thestudioat620.org. For more about Juneteenth, see www.Juneteenth.com.
