Tonight’s annual tree lighting is one of the things that put St. Petersburg among Florida’s Most Magical Christmas Towns.

ST. PETERSBURG — Tonight the holiday lights go on.

The season officially begins in North Straub Park when Mayor Rick Kriseman lights a giant Christmas tree on the western edge of the downtown waterfront park. On-stage entertainment includes the St. Pete High Pitchforks, Expressions Dance Studio and the St. Petersburg Community Band. Children can enjoy special activities and interactive games. Food concessions are available. This free and open-to-the-public event is 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The tree lighting is one of the elements that put St. Petersburg on a list of the 10 Most Enchanting, Magical Christmas Towns in Florida, compiled by the website OnlyinYourState.com . St. Pete was fourth on the list behind Celebration, Pensacola and St. Augustine. The rest of the list included West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Naples and Tallahassee.

Other St. Petersburg events that boosted the city to a Top 5 ranking included the Santa Parade, the Snowfest, ice skating and Santa visits in North Straub Park and the array of lights along the waterfront.
