One tonight (March 28) is about using rain barrels to capture water; another is a “Sustainable Floridians” course that begins Saturday (April 2).

ST. PETERSBURG — Two programs encouraging water conservation and sustainability are being offered by the City of St. Petersburg.

Tonght’s (March 28) Rainwater Guardian Workshop takes place at the Thomas “Jet” Jackson Recreation Center at 1000 28th St. S, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshop is free and attendees can get a free rain barrel, but advance registration is required. Register here: http://bit.ly/1Up6iHy .

The workshop will show you how to collect usable rain runoff. For example, 1/2 inch of rain can result in 300 gallons of water collected from 1,000 square feet of roof.

Another program, Sustainable Floridians, begins Saturday (April 2). It runs every other Saturday from April 2 through May 14, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. This coming Saturday’s session is mandatory orientation for the course.

The Pinellas County UF/IFAS Extension course uses a discussion-to-action format that explores green strategies and behaviors.

On weeks without face-to-face meetings, participants will be given access to a webinar covering a new module.  Webinars can be completed at one’s own pace throughout the week. Specific topics include energy, water, consumerism, food systems, climate change and community leadership.
