St. Pete History Museum Wants Your Photos of Cuba

The museum would like to include community photographs in its upcoming Experience Cuba exhibit. 

ST. PETERSBURG — The St. Petersburg Museum of History invites the Tampa Bay community to take part in the Experience Cuba exhibit by submitting personal photographs of Cuba celebrating the beauty, culture and history of the once-forbidden island.

The multi-faceted exhibition opens June 15 and features: Cuba, The Natural Beauty – The Photography of Clyde Butcher, in addition to original artwork of Cuban artists Los Carpinteros and Ibrahim Miranda. Experience Cuba is presented by AARP and the Florida Humanities Council.

The museum is particularly interested in community photos that capture Cuba’s culture and history. The culture category highlights the people, places and activities of present-day Cuba, from the 1957 Chevys to unique architecture to crowds waiting to meet the Tampa Bay Rays. The history category features the stories and photographs of old Cuba. Residents are encouraged to submit family photos and share their stories of a life, or time in Cuba.

Submission Rules:

Deadline:  Digital or scanned photographs will be accepted through Friday, June 3, 2016.

Where to Submit:  cuba@spmoh.org.

Photos:  Images should be 300 dpi, no larger than 5MB. All submissions must include applicant’s name, telephone number and information about the photo, such as its location and date shot, etc.

Quantity:  Applicants may submit no more than three photos per category.

Ownership:  Applicant must own the photograph and if selected, be required to sign a release form for each photograph. If chosen, applicant will authorize SPMOH to use the photograph in the Experience Cuba xxhibit, and also for educational, archival, advertising, marketing and promotional purposes. Applicant WILL maintain all other rights to his/her image.

Selection:  A Museum selection committee will meet on June 4 and choose the photographs to be included in the Experience Cuba exhibit.

Photographers whose work is chosen will be invited to the Museum Members private opening on June 14.

Experience Cuba will run from June 15 to Sept. 30, 2016. It will include special events during the summer, such as a Cuban food and music festival and a Night at the Tropicana Casino.
