Classes at the new 45,000-square-foot center will start Aug. 17.

ST. PETERSBURG — A block party and open house Saturday (Aug. 1) heralds the opening of St. Petersburg College’s new Midtown Center, and students who apply that day will not have to pay the usual $40 application fee.

The Douglas L. Jamerson Jr. Midtown Center, named for the late state legislator, education commissioner and secretary of labor, is at 1300 22nd St. S.  Saturday’s free event begins at 11 a.m. and all are invited.

Classes in the 45,000-square-foot center begin Aug. 17 when the Fall term starts. Programs will be offered in advanced manufacturing, clinical medical assisting, computer support, early childhood educations, entrepreneurship, human services and associate in arts degree. The entrepreneurship and human services programs offer associate in science degrees.

Saturday’s program offers tours of the new facility, live entertainment, free barbecue and refreshments, a “kids zone” sponsored by the City of St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation Department, full registration services, free vouchers for SPC’s “Learn to Earn” career development courses,  complimentary career and academic advising, assistance with financial aid services, and about three dozen vendors and community organizations.

Besides offering convenience for residents of Midtown neighborhoods, the center represents another step in the redevelopment of 22nd Street S, once the African-American community’s main commercial, professional and entertainment street. SPC’s original Midtown campus opened in 2003 two blocks north of the new center.
