Soccer Comes to Clearwater

The Philadelphia Union returns to Clearwater for spring training; adding a new  preseason tournament with six other major league soccer teams.

CLEARWATER – Clearwater continues to be the desired place to be for major league teams during spring training season.

Once again the city of Clearwater will host the Philadelphia Union major league soccer team. Throughout the club’s six-year history, the Union played in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final in 2014 and 2015, and played in the major league soccer playoffs in 2011.

The squad will spend much of February in Clearwater, honing their skills on the soccer fields at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex. Training will take go through Feb. 28. The first game will be Thursday (Feb. 11) against Chicago Fire at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, 2450 Drew St.

This will be the second year the Union has called Clearwater their preseason home after signing a three-year deal last year, with an option to extend that deal in the future.

Upgrades to the DiMaggio Complex including field renovations and new bleachers will make for a more enjoyable fan experience.

This year the Union will play in the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Suncoast Invitational,a new preseason exhibition tournament. Games will be played Feb. 17-27. Teams participating will include American League Soccer team the Tampa Bay Rowdies; MLS teams the Union, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls, D.C. United, New YorkCity FC and Montreal Impact.

Matches will take place at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg and the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater.
