Tampa’s Undie Run Benefits Colon Cancer

Both Tampa and St. Petersburg hav Undy Runs benefitting charities.

TAMPA — For the fourth year, the Colon Cancer Alliance is host to an Undy Run/Walk in the Tampa Bay area. This year’s event will take place at Al Lopez Park in Tampa on Saturday ( Feb. 6) with a 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. followed by a mile fun run.

In St. Petersburg, an Undie Run and party begin at noon Feb. 13 at the Yard of Ale, 260 First Ave. N. The mile fun run starts at 2 p.m.  This one benefits The Children’s Tumor Foundation. (See Tampa Bay Reporter on Jan. 27 for details.)

Tampa is one of 20 cities in the U.S. holding an event this year. “We are excited to return to Tampa for the fourth  consecutive year. The Tampa community continues to rally around colon cancer patients and survivors and all of those affected by this disease, ” said Julie Fisher, Special Events Senior Manager for the Colon Cancer Alliance.

Funds raised from the event support various prevention, research and patient support initiatives, including The University of South Florida BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic, a free, student-run clinic, which through the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Blue Hope Partnership Program, has a process in place to evaluate the need for a colonoscopy.

The course is USATF-certified and chip-timed. Participants are invited to show up in their undies or in a costume. Boxer shorts will be given to all participants. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in each age group and the overall male and female winner’s will recieve plaques in a post-race awards ceremony.

Local businesses will be present at a pre-race expo with free giveaways. There will also be a giant, infatable colon which will provide for a fun photo opportunity.
