Here’s a modest list of news and upcoming events of interest in the Sunshine City — and from across the bay in the Cigar City.

ST. PETERSBURG — A couple of these you will want to put on your calendar: Think a Jack Kerouac show at Studio@620 and the MacDill Airfest. And a few others have subjects that may pique your interest: guns, bicycles and the new pier, for example.

First, the calendar:

• The annual festival at St. Paul Catholic Church in St. Petersburg is Thursday (March 3) through Sunday. The annual fun blast features food, beverages, live music and a full array of carnival rides. The church is at 1900 12th St. N. Visit its website  http://www.stpaul1930.org/ for more info.
• The Studio@620 on March 13, 7 p.m. will screen “Jack Kerouac’s Florida”, created by local film maker Kristy Andersen as part of the SunLit Festival. Through interviews with journalists, neighbors, colleagues, and bartenders, the film provides a glimpse into the Beat writer’s evolving personality, and his experiences in Tampa and St. Petersburg. • MacDill Airfest2016 takes place at MacDill Air Force Base on March 19-20. Gates open at 8 a.m. Parking and admission are free. http://www.macdill.af.mil/airfest2016/
• Brendon Stanton, who started the Internet feature “Humans of New York,” will speak 7:30 p.m. April 5 at the Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida Tampa campus. The lecture is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

And the news bits:

• The design team for the Pier Approach – W Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Wannemacher Jensen Architects – are seeking input from the community on aspects of this vital project, which will connect downtown to the Pier.  The public is invited to provide input to the design team at a meeting 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on March 15 at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg’s University Student Center Ballroom, 200 Sixth Ave. S.
• St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman has asked gun shops to distribute a letter to legal gun owners, asking them to store their guns safely to keep them out of the hands of children and criminals. The letter also informs them to pick-up a free gun lock at the police department’s Crime Prevention Unit by calling (727) 893-7128. Anyone who lives or works in St. Petersburg is eligible to receive a free gun lock. Kriseman also has brought in Community Intervention Director, Rev. Kenny Irby. This is a position created to ensure young felons are provided with community resources to help them get back on a successful track.
• The St. Petersburg City Council, through a non-binding vote, suggested it may support Kriseman’s bike-sharing plan, which comes with a $1.5-million price tag. The idea is to get more pedalers on the streets to reduce auto emissions. The bikes would be available for rent at stations mostly in downtown St. Pete.
