Cyclists who disobey traffic rules also will be under scrutiny, as will vehicles that don’t yield to pedestrians.

ST. PETERSBURG — Beginning today (April 4), police will crack down on jaywalkers and on bicyclists who ignore traffic laws.

Officers have been issuing warnings for the past several months in an attempt to educate pedestrians and cyclists. Now it’s time to start issuing tickest, police say. A jaywalking ticket might run about $60.

The crackdown comes in the wake of a deadly year. In 2015 in St. Petersburg, 12 pedestrians and cyclists were killed in accidents in St. Petersburg alone. The figure contributed to a record number of fatalities in the Pinellas/Hillsborough area

Vehicles that don’t yield to pedestrians in a legal crosswalk are also going to come under scrutiny, police said.

“I hate to sound uptight but I think this is needed,” commented a downtown St. Pete bserver. “People just walk out in traffic all the time, thinking since they are a pedestrian that they have the right of way. You still have to follow the rules.”
