After “scores” of complaints from Treasure Island residents and visitors, the state Department of Transportation has decided to delay the repaving of Gulf Boulevard. Work will begin again in May.

TREASURE ISLAND – City officials here are thanking residents and visitors who complained to the Florida Department of Transportation about the “horrible traffic jams” caused by the start of a repaving project along Gulf Boulevard. Calling the decision to begin repaving Gulf at the height of the tourist season “an attempt to quite possibly receive the most complaints of any state department,” Treasure Island officials said the $2 million project is “wisely on hold” until May. The last day of paving until then was Thursday (March 12). When the project begins again “in a saner time of the season,” Treasure Island says not only will FDOT be repaving the original swath of Gulf (SR 699) from 150th Avennue to 125th Avenue, it will also repave the portion from 99th Avenue to 105th Avenue. This second project, estimated to cost $1 million, will cause intermittent lane closures until it is finished in the fall. When work resumes, construction hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Night and weekend work are not allowed. Other improvements include adding bike lanes and replacing damaged driveways and sidewalks. Access to driveways and side streets will be maintained.
