ST. PETERSBURG — In its 50th anniversary year, USF St. Petersburg will have the lead position in the 2016 National MLK Drum Major for Justice Parade Monday ( Jan. 18) at 11 a.m. USFSP students, staff and faculty will join members of the community, marching bands, and other entrants in celebrating the parade’s 31st anniversary year.

The parade’s website says the annual event, which began in 1985, consistently has drawn 100,000 spectators and is recognized as the oldest and largest MLK parade celebration in the southeastern U.S.  Members of the USFSP community have participated in the parade each year since 1994.
The celebration of King’s legacy will continue on Jan. 28 with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 50 Greats Awards Banquet. It will take place at 7 p.m. in the University Student Center Ballroom
The event will celebrate the sacrifices and contributions made by USFSP students, alumni and students from local high schools who promote the spirit of MLK through community service, leadership or social justice-related activities. The program will feature a keynote speaker, a special awards presentation, a networking period and light refreshments
