St. Petersburg Police Officer Shot

Police officials say the officer is recovering. The suspected shooter is dead.

ST. PETERSBURG – A St. Petersburg police officer is recovering after being shot in the leg while searching for a man who had shot a man in the hand.

Fellow officers then shot the suspect, Austin Lee Goodner, 18, of 5236 Robin Lane N in St. Petersburg. Goodner died at a local hospital.

St. Petersburg police Chief Tony Holloway said officers were called to the area of 1886 Coffee Pot Blvd. NE around 6 p.m. Sunday (May 17) by a man who said he had had a verbal altercation with a white male who produced a handgun and shot him once in the hand. The armed suspect then fled the scene on a bicycle.Officers identified Goodner as a possible suspect and officers responded to his last known address at 5236 Robin Lane N.

Around 6:46 p.m.,while officers searched around the exterior of the house, Goodner suddenly appeared armed with a handgun and fired at one officer, wounding him the leg. Other officers on the scene confronted Goodner who fired his weapon again. Officers returned fire and Goodner was wounded in the upper body and later died at the hospital.

The wounded officer is 40 years oldof age and has been a sworn officer for over 10 years. His wound is not life threatening. Police have not released his name.

The department’s Investigative Services Bureau and Office of Professional Standards, as well as the Pinellas/Pasco State Attorney’s Office are conducting ongoing investigations. Updates are expected later today (May 18).  For information, see facebook.com.
