ST. PETERSBURG — The Police Athletic League’s annual fundraising “brinner” (breakfast for dinner) will be held at the St. Petersburg Coliseum Monday (Feb. 8), featuring Fox 13’s Laura Moody as emcee and Tampa Bay Rays president Brian Auld as keynote speaker.

A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., food is served at 6:30 and the program starts at 7. The Coliseum is at 535 Fourth Ave. N.

Among PAL’s goals is establishment of a Midtown branch in south St. Petersburg. The satellite facility has been in the planning stages for more than two years. A former PAL board member has donated $25,000 toward it, but the sum is contingent on the organization matching it. PAL is seeking money from the community.

The organization is in its 56th year in St. Petersburg. In its 1960 beginning, youngsters were taught the rudiments of boxing on the front lawn of what became the Woodlawn Recreation Center. The facility used several sites during its earlier years but eventually came home to its original Woodlawn location: 1450 16th Street N, where it remains.

Today’s PAL offers numerous youth programs, including wrestling, flag football, cheerleading, BMX, summer camp and an after-school program.

“It gives the children some place to go,” said St. Petersburg Police Chief Tony Holloway. “Other kids have told us that if they have this energy build-up, they go out and commit crimes because they have nothing else to do. So PAL gives them that organization they need in their lives.”
