International Soccer Tournament Coming to St. Pete

The Tampa Bay Rowdies will play in the Florida Cup, which features several games at Al Lang Stadium.

ST. PETERSBURG –The international Florida Cup soccer tournament kicks off Jan. 8 at Al Lang Stadium, with a doubleheader featuring Estudiantes of Argentina vs. Bayer 04 Leverkusen of Germany at 2 p.m, followed by the Tampa Bay Rowdies vs.  VFL Wolfsburg of Germany at 4:45.

On Jan. 14, the Rowdies play Atletico Mineiro of Brazil at 4 p.m. at Al Lang.

The Florida Cup tournament is conducted in two sections, each with different formats and each with six teams. The Rowdies are competing only in the Challenge 2017 section, which also includes Bahia from Brazil. The Challenge 2017 stage is from Jan 8-15; teams play two matches each with a point system determining the winner.

The Playoff 2017 section is from Jan. 15-21. In this section, the teams play in a traditional one-loss-and-out format. Teams include Vasco da Gama from Brazil; Corinthians from Brazil; River Plate from Argentina; Barcelona SC from Ecuador; Sao Paulo FC from Brazil; and Millonarios FC from Colombia.

On Jan. 19, Sao Paulo plays the River Plate-Millonarios winner at Al Lang, 7 p.m.

Other venues during the two-week extravaganza include Fort Lauderdale’s Lockhart Stadium, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando and Bright House Networks Stadium at the University of Central Florida, also in Orlando.
