The documentary, titled 13th, will be shown at Allendale Methodist Church in St. Pete.

ST. PETERSBURG — A free public screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary 13th will take place on Saturday (March 18) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Allendale United Methodist Church, 3803 Haines Road N.

Co-hosted by the Bay Area Dream Defenders and Awake Pinellas, the event is entitled “Racism 101-A: A Film Screening and Discussion.” The screening will be followed by small and large group discussions.

The film, which takes it’s title from the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery, is directed by Ava DuVerney and explores the relationship between slavery and the modern-day prison system. DuVerney also directed the critically-acclaimed historical drama Selma.

13th has received numerous film awards and nominations including the NAACP Image Award for “Best Documentary.” It was released on Netflix on Oct. 6 of last year and was granted public screening access by the company in February after numerous requests by schools and community groups.
