The St. Petersburg City Council is scheduled to face a decision over the design of the new pier during its meeting today (May 7).

ST. PETERSBURG – The City Council is scheduled to vote today (May 7) on whether to proceed with the Pier Park design to replace the inverted pyramid, a fixture on the downtown waterfront since 1973.

The Pier Selection Committee two weeks ago named the Pier Park proposal its No. 1 choice. The design includes landscaping, a building at the end, gardens, a splash pond, restaurant and bike and walking paths.  If the council approves the plan, negotiations can begin with Pier Park designers, thus moving the process forward.  The council also could reject Pier Park, which would mean starting over with the design-ranking process.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled at 8: 30 a.m. in the second floor council chambers, St. Petersburg City Hall, 175 Fifth St. N.
