Seminole Voters Go to Polls Tuesday

Election Results | Pinellas Elections | Local News

Two city council seats are up for grabs. Voters will also have their say on two proposed charter amendments.

SEMINOLE – Voters here have their pick of six candidates for the two open seats on the Seminole council in Tuesday’s (Nov. 3) election.

Four of the candidates are familiar faces for Seminole voters – Chris Burke, an incumbent who’s running for re-election; Thomas Christy, who has run unsuccessfully several times; Joe Haynes, who has run once before; and Fred Petty, a former Pinellas tax collector. The other two, Dave Outlaw and Trish Springer, are first timers.

Also on the ballot are two proposed changes to the Seminole city charter. The charter acts as a kind of Constitution for the city. Both proposals have to do with the attendance of council members at publicly posted meetings, which would include council meetings and workshops. One item would cause a council member who missed six publicly posted meetings in a 12-month period to forfeit his/her seat unless the absences were formally approved by the remaining members of the council. The other would give council members the power to determine what constitutes an excused absence.

Seminole has a council-manager form of government. The daily activities of the city are overseen by a professional city manager. The seven-member non-partisan council consists of a mayor and six other members who run at large. Council members serve three-year terms and are paid $8,200 a year. Council members are responsible for attending at least two meetings a month. They are responsible for passing a budget, establishing policy, hiring and firing the city manager, and hiring and firing the city attorney. The two top vote-getters will take office.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
