Safety Harbor Adds “Sharrows” to North Bayshore

Bicycle | Bicyclist | Bicycle Traffic

A sharrow is a device designed to make bicycling safer.

SAFETY HARBOR – Safety Harbor has new sharrows on North Bayshore Boulevard! If you’re unfamiliar with what a sharrow is, here’s a quick lesson to get you up to speed on this new roadway marking. Under Florida law, bicycles are defined as motor vehicles and may ride on the road. State law requires bicyclists to ride as far to the right as practicable. On roads without bicycle lanes, bicyclists share lanes with motorists. When a lane is too narrow for a bicycle and a car to travel safely, the cyclist may use the entire lane. A sharrow, or Shared Lane Marking (SLM), indicates to both motorists and cyclists that they’re in a shared lane environment. If you haven’t seen a sharrow yet, here’s what to look for: a bike with two white chevrons. Safety Harbor is using sharrows to enhance safe bicycling and to bring awareness of the importance of sharing the road.
