Seminole Man Charged with DUI after Crashing into Sheriff’s Van

The driver of the Pinellas sheriff’s van was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

PINELLAS PARK – A sheriff’s employee was injured when a drunken driver crashed into the rear of a prison transport van, according to Pinellas deputies.

No prisoners were in the van at the time of the collision. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

Djordje Bancu, 60, of 11692 83rd Ave. N, Seminole, was charged with driving under the influence.

The collision happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 12), in the area of Bryan Dairy Road and U.S. 19 N in Pinellas Park. Deputies said Necia Austin, who was driving a sheriff’s office transport van, was stopped for a red light in the eastbound lane of Bryan Dairy at U.S. 19.  Bancu, who was driving a Ford F-150,  was approaching the van from the rear when his foot slipped from the brake pedal, causing him to roll into the rear of the van. Bancu showed signs of impairment from an unknown substance, deputies said. A DUI investigation was conducted and Bancu was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Bancu was taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

Austin was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
