The county has asked residents for suggestions on ways to spend the $7.1 million. They’ll discuss those at the workshop.

PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas County commission will hold a BP settlement funds workshop at 6 p..m. Tuesday (July 12) in the fifth floor assembly room of the Pinellas County Courthouse, 315 Court St., Clearwater.

In July 2015, the county accepted a settlement from BP of $7.1 million. The settlement represents a one-time revenue source. Once these funds are expended, there will not be any additional related monies.

In early June, the commission launched an online survey to seek resident input on more defined project ideas for the future use of funds from a settlement with oil company British Petroleum.  More than 350 residents responded. Before that, commissioners took part in a facilitated discussion to determine guiding principles for use of the funds. They did so after conducting a citizen engagement survey and receiving public feedback from more than 800 residents on how the funds should be spent.
