The closing will affect portions of 49th Street N in Lealman and Pinellas Park

PINELLAS – Drivers who use one of the busiest north-south routes in Pinellas County will have to find new ways to travel for about a month, starting Friday (July 31).

Pinellas County and CSX Transportation are set to improve railway crossings on 49th Street N in the Lealman and Pinellas Park area. The repair work will affect traffic along 49th from 54th Avenue N to Park Boulevard. Road closures while these improvements take place are scheduled to start Friday (July 31) and last through Aug. 21. Detour signs will be posted for local traffic.

Motorists who travel north and south on 49th between 54th Avenue N and Park Boulevard should use either 66th Street N or U.S. 19.  Local traffic can use other local roads that may be familiar; however, all large trucks must use the designated detour route.

This railroad reconstruction project is part of the systematic maintenance and railway improvement and replacement program. Public railroad-highway grade crossings in the county are identified for replacement according to the age or condition of the crossing.

This high volume crossing was last reconstructed in 2000 using rubber crossing pads that typically have a lifespan of 10 to12 years. The project includes replacement of damaged or undersized rails with a prefabricated, tie-less tub-style concrete crossing, and reconstruction of the roadway to match the new elevation of the railway.
